Internet Tips

I'm producing a set of beginners' internet tips for the Canterbury Handbook.
Here's the first one. More coming soon!

Part 1: Taking Control of Your Browser

Tip 1: Stopping moving adverts

Movement and sound on the internet can be fantastic, but it can also be really annoying when you're trying to read something important. But you can control what you see online with just a few adjustments to your browser settings.

A moving image could be an animated gif, or it might be a Flash animation.. So you need to tell your browser to stop showing these two features.

For Internet Explorer 7, you can view or download instructions in pdf or view my online tutorial (requires Flash player).

In the Opera browser, it's incredibly easy. Go to Tools - Quick Preferences, and uncheck 'enable Plug-ins', 'enable gif/svg animation' and 'enable sounds in webpages'.

In Firefox, you'll have to install an add-on. The PrefBar add-on enables you to quickly toggle things on and off.

Are these animations annoying you? Now you can stop them!
